TITLE: LINE COOK (Part time)

REPORTS TO: GENERAL MANAGER/KITCHEN MANAGER

JOB SUMMMARY:

Preparation of food to be served complying with all applicable sanitation, health, and personal hygiene standards, following established food production programs and procedures.  Work closely with management to help guarantee our guests a dining experience which exceeds their expectations.

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensure that all mise en place is prepared for respective stations as well as proper forecasting of prep needs for assigned station.
  • Prepare food products and execute dishes meeting the standards of the Kitchen Manager, Farm Management and our guests, ensuring that food production is coordinated with meal hours so that quality, temperature, and appearance of food are preserved.
  • Ability to safely operate kitchen equipment including, but not limited to, ovens, stoves, dishwashers, slicers, steamers, mixers and chef’s knives.
  • Handle and communicate special orders and guest complaints in a professional manner.  Have a basic understanding of food allergies and cross contamination issues to ensure safety of diners.
  • Maintain food safety, work station and personal cleanliness and sanitations standards as required by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, OSHA, and MEMIC, as well as general maintenance and upkeep of kitchen equipment.
  • Know who to notify in case of broken equipment or unsafe/unsanitary conditions.
  • Must be able to manually handle/lift product up to 40 pounds between knee and chest
  • Must have bilateral fine manipulation of both hands which may be repetitive for entire shift
  • Must be vertically mobile working in limited space for entire shift
  • Protect the assets of Smiling Hill Farm.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States of America.
  • Previous experience as a line cook in a similar property, culinary school, preferred but not mandatory.
  • Ability to communicate in English, both orally and written, with guests and employees, some of whom will require high levels of patience, tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to understand verbal directions, as well as written menus, recipes, labels on foods and chemicals, and other workplace safety signage. 
  • Ability to work under pressure and deal with stressful situations during busy periods.

ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Frequent walking, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, lifting, manual dexterity and repetitive motions.  May require the ability to work on uneven outdoor surfaces.
  • Stair climbing.
  • Working in extreme temperatures conditions both indoors and out. 
  • Schedule varies according to operational needs; may includes evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Frequent hand-washing
  • Hazards include, but are not limited to cuts from knives and slicers, burns, exposure to raw meat, poultry, seafood, and produce, slips, and tripping.

TITLE: DAIRY STORE EMPLOYEE

DEPARTMENT: DAIRY STORE

REPORTS TO: DAIRY STORE MANAGER/GENERAL MANAGER

JOB SUMMMARY:

Working as a member of our Dairy Store team, ensure that guests have an enjoyable experience by providing quality customer service, including accurately taking orders, understanding menu items, keeping all spaces clean and organized, helping in kitchen during busy hours, and accurately processing and collecting payment.  Work with management and staff to help guarantee our guests an experience which exceeds their expectations.

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:.

  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance with a proper uniform including head covering.
  • Greet guests warmly and politely upon entering the building.
  • Be prepared to answer questions about ice cream and lunch menu items
  • Understand order taking systems to be able to clearly, accurately and quickly take and fulfill orders.
  • Ability to safely operate restaurant equipment including, but not limited to coffee makers, refrigeration, soup warmers, toasters, point of sale systems and other basic kitchen equipment and appliances, etc.
  • Have a basic understanding of common food allergies and communicate these issues to the kitchen to ensure diner safety.
  • Complete all cleaning and stocking tasks throughout the shift.
  • Maintain food safety, service station and personal cleanliness and sanitation standards as required by the state regulations and OSHA, as well as general maintenance and upkeep of dining room/restaurant.
  • Know who to notify in case of broken equipment or unsafe/unsanitary conditions.
  • Must be able to manually handle/lift/carry product up to 50 pounds between knee and shoulders.
  • Must have bilateral fine manipulation of both hands which may be repetitive for entire shift.
  • Must be vertically mobile working in limited space for entire shift.
  • Protect the assets of Smiling Hill Farm.

Seasonal position: Barnyard Animal Caretaker (interviews begin in March)

The position involves the daily care, feeding, and maintenance of a diverse range of domesticated livestock and poultry. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, disciplined, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.

Applicants should demonstrate a positive attitude, strong interpersonal skills, and comfort engaging with customers. This role requires patience and the ability to educate and interact with both children and adults, as well as respond thoughtfully to questions and inquiries.

A strong sense of responsibility is essential, as employees are entrusted with ensuring animals are properly fed, watered, enriched, and cared for on a consistent, day-to-day basis. Candidates must exhibit a deep respect for all living creatures, with a commitment to maintaining the safety and well-being of the animals, themselves, and the public.

Effective communication with coworkers, supervisors, and customers is required. Employees are also responsible for monitoring animal health and exhibit conditions, and for promptly reporting any concerns to the supervisor on duty.

This is a physically demanding role that requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and involves significant walking. The work schedule includes mornings, afternoons, and weekends.

Cow Barn:

Chore Person (AM/PM Shifts)

The Chore Person is responsible for assisting with the daily care and maintenance of the herd. Responsibilities include scraping and cleaning barn areas, bedding cows and calves, and feeding livestock. Additional duties include general barn upkeep such as sweeping, raking, and shoveling.

Shifts are as follows:

  • AM Shift: 5:00 AM – 9:30 AM
  • PM Shift: 3:30 PM – 8:00 PM

Candidates should demonstrate strong attention to detail, a solid work ethic, and a willingness to learn. While prior experience with animals is preferred, it is not required; training will be provided. This role involves both independent tasks and teamwork, working closely with the herdsperson and milker on duty.

Applicants must be at least 16 years old due to shift requirements, available to work weekends, and able to lift up to 50 pounds. Both full-time and part-time opportunities are available.


Milker

The Milker position requires candidates to be at least 18 years old. In addition to performing duties similar to those of a Chore Person, this role includes milking the herd and ensuring proper sanitation of equipment and animal areas.

The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, a commitment to cleanliness and animal care, and the ability to work comfortably around adult cows. This position also involves close coordination with other team members to maintain efficient and safe operations.

This role requires availability on weekends and holidays, as animal care is a daily responsibility.
